How to make your office more eco-friendly

This Global Recycling Day we wanted to look at how we can all make changes in our workplaces and offices in order to be eco-friendlier and take better care of our world.

So, without further ado, here are a few ways to have a more eco-friendly office:

1. Go paperless (or as paperless as you can go)

While we acknowledge that some paper documents are needed in certain business sectors, you should look to reduce the amount of paper used in your office and use digital solutions instead. For example, you could adopt digital invoices (if you haven’t already) and other documents like company handbooks or guides to reduce paper consumption.

2. Opt for environmentally-friendly products for your office cleans, kitchens and bathrooms

It might not have crossed your mind before but not all products are created equal. For example, some hand soap is eco-friendlier than others and some cleaning products avoid harsh chemicals that can damage our environment. When deciding what products to use for all your communal spaces and cleans there a few key factors that you should consider. What, if any, harsh chemicals are in the products? What are the products packaged in? Do you get soap in a plastic bottle when you could be supporting a brand that uses cardboard packaging? Where are the products from? Are they brought locally or do you get them shipped to you, impacting your carbon footprint? If you already have products that aren’t as eco-friendly as you would like, make sure to use these up and when you go to re-buy consider a different purchase to a product that reduces harm to our environment.

3. Change your suppliers

You could consider who supplies the energy, water and gas to your office and evaluate each one. Are you using the most environmentally friendly option? Does the company have an environmental policy and stance that they are passionate about? And what are they doing to off-set any environmental damage that they could be creating? Who your business decides to work with is important, all the way down to the supplier of your office’s gas. Make sure that you are working with companies who share the same environmental goals and promises that you do.

4. Employee offerings

A big area to look at when trying to create a more eco-friendly office is your employees. In order to improve you could offer and encourage remote work, either in a hybrid model or to certain job roles. This would reduce the need for commuting and thus reduce the associated emissions. If remote work is not possible for your industry you could look at offering employee incentives or subsidies for using public transportation or different modes of transport, like the bike to work scheme. This would help reduce employee’s car emissions if they would have otherwise driven and as a plus can boost their mood and overall fitness.

5. Consider Environmental Certifications

The final step that we will be discussing is working towards environmental certifications as a business. This can be a challenging process as standards for certain certifications are quite high, but if you have the passion and the resource it is certainly something to consider. Receiving a certification, such as, becoming a B Corp certified business would demonstrate your businesses clear commitment to sustainability.

So there are just a few ways that your business could try to become a more eco-friendly office. The main elements to keep in mind when moving forward in a sustainable way is reducing waste, conserving resources, and making environmentally responsible choices across all aspects of your operations.

By keeping this all top of mind, your business can contribute to a more sustainable future, while also potentially saving money, attracting environmentally conscious customers, and building a positive reputation. So lets act like every day is Global Recycling Day and make choices that will protect our world.

Thanks for reading.
