How to create a website that works for your business
In this article we look at 5 website must-haves to optimise your sites performance.
Here at Performance Development & Training (PDT) we know the importance of your website. Acting as a shop window for your business, a website can very much make or break your chance for a new sale or cause you to miss the opportunity of turning a suspect into a new customer.
Because a businesses website is so important, here at PDT we decided that it was about time for us to update ours, with our original site being designed in 2015, you could say it was fairly dated. And with all the advances in tech and digital marketing, we knew we needed to keep up with the times. Therefore, we decided to create an entirely new site, concentrating on the aspects we believe bring website success – the aspects we’ll be discussing in this article.
For the sake of simplicity, we will split the elements of website success into 5 points, giving tips with each point that is stated. However, to achieve true website success and optimisation all these elements need to work together, if you focus purely on one and neglect the others your return will be considerably less.
That being said, our first element of success that we have chosen to focus on is making sure the content on your website is clear, concise and in plain English.
1. Plain English – when writing your content, you want to ensure you have clear messaging throughout your site. You want to explain this is what we do and this is why you should work with us. You want to put yourself in your customers shoes, asking what they want to achieve on your site and think about how, when writing your content, you can make this easier for them. Therefore, you do not want heavy jargon, inflated language or a lot of information in a small space. And make sure to use a tone that is confident but not intimidating.
Our second element is all about the importance of Search engine optimisation (SEO) in making your website discoverable.
2. SEO – SEO is simply crafting your website in a way that takes advantage of all the ways it can be discovered online. By researching the right keywords for your business and spreading these throughout your site. Having the correct alt text for each of your images, writing blog posts around what you do and your industry and having backlinks from social media or other websites to your site. There are so many ways you can optimise how your website appears on search engines, and you should try and use as many as possible.
Number three is landing pages, what are they? And how can they help secure business or prospect information.
3. Landing pages – A landing page is a page a prospect is directed to where they can put in their information. The information is usually given based on receiving a reply or a free download of some sort. Landing pages are incredibly useful for collecting the data of prospects and keeping a record of people who may not be ready to buy yet. If leveraged correctly, landing pages on your website can be invaluable to securing new business.
Next up we have website analytics, analysing how your website is used, who visits it and where from can help you to constantly adapt and improve your strategy.
4. Analytics – A website is a great tool to gather data from, simply imbed an analytic provider code on your website and begin recording. Collecting this information will help you refine your website on what is working and what isn’t.
And last but not least we have the visual content that is actually displayed throughout your website.
5. Visual content – The graphics and content on your site is extremely important. First, you need to actually have some – content like photographs, graphics and video are a lot more engaging and eye catching than just written content on your site. So make sure to have a blend of content types throughout. Next you want to make sure there is cohesion across your visual content. You should always use the same font, the same colour ways and tone of voice are also important to reflect your businesses messages coherently.
So there you have it, our 5 elements of a website that we believe you need to master to have website success.

The key to the whole process was the project brief and PDT’s ability to understand not only our business capabilities but how to communicate that to the contact being made on our behalf. The success rate of appointments was more than acceptable and significant project bids have been made to numerous potential new customers as a result of PDT’s service.”
-Nick Chambers – Business Unit General Manager.
